Stonehenge & Salisbury

Stonehenge & Salisbury walk

See a selection of photos from this walk.

Hike through history on a long, lazy ramble down the valley of the River Avon, starting beneath the monument at Stonehenge and finishing in the beautiful cathedral city of Salisbury.

Leaving London early, we arrive at Stonehenge by mid-morning and explore the stone circle. From here, our path leads south off the plateau of Salisbury Plain, descending through rolling countryside and horse farms to meet the River Avon near an old water mill.

At the Black Horse pub in the little village of Great Durnford we break for lunch, and afterwards pay a visit to the ancient parish church of St Andrew.

On the afternoon walk, there are sweeping views over the Wiltshire countryside as we follow the edge of the valley south to the impressive hill fort of Old Sarum. The Romans occupied this strategic high ground following their invasion of Britain in 43 AD, but Old Sarum is far older than this – evidence shows that it's been inhabited by humans for at least 5000 years.

From the southern side of the hill fort, the elegant steeple of Salisbury Cathedral stands out above the town like a beacon. We make straight for it and finish our walk at the base of this awesome medieval skyscraper – 751 years old and 404 feet tall.

We return to London by train in the evening.

See the calendar for walk dates.
